Red hot chili peppers - Under the bridge Live acoustic

I remember telling my brother that I wanted to buy this album when this song came out and he told me that it wasn't really representative of RHCP's music.

He was right.

I think he and his wife used to give their leftovers to a dude who lived under a bridge.

Reheard the song recently and it resonated with me quite differently than when I was 11 or so when it was released.

The good news and the bad news

The bad news is you're falling through the air, nothing to hang on to, no parachute.
The good news is there is no ground.

one hundred eighty degrees south

a beautifully inspiring film.

coming down the mountain

i'm told skills develop in situations that are less than ideal.

i'm also told that the word "skill" comes from the germanic language and means "the ability to separate things."
sometimes compartmentalization is not a bad thing.

Precautionary Principle

The precautionary principle states that if an action or policy has a suspected risk of causing harm to the public or to the environment, in the absence of scientific consensus that the action or policy is harmful, the burden of proof that it is not harmful falls on those taking the action.

No means No

It's true.
No means No.
Except sometimes, No means Yes.
When saying No is actually saying Yes to your life.

santosha

I've liked this guy's op-eds for a long time and not just because he grew up on a farm in Oregon (but maybe partly because of it).

Santosha (सन्तोष) (contentment) is one of the niyamas of Yoga as listed by Patanjali.[1] Contentment is variously described, but can be thought of as not coveting more than you have and is therefore very different to the way some modern western societies encourage the population to acquire more 'stuff' to achieve contentment. It may be seen as renunciation (of the need to acquire).

please standby

this is a test of the emergency broadcast system.
this is only a test.
if this were a real emergency we would be doing something.
but we're not really doing anything.
this is not a real emergency.
this is only a test.

this is only a test.

please standby.
you will be returned to your regular programming.

please standby.

this is only a test.

"there's always the nuclear option"

locked my keys in the car this morning. walked home and back to get the spare.

today's NPR headline says "there's always the nuclear option" in terms of the massive quantities of oil spewing into the gulf.

I'm trying to drive less. Don't really know what else to do.

albedo: the reflective cooling effect of white ice that is lost when ice melts (as in an effect of the polar ice cap melt).

i'm not making it up. look it up if you want an mla reference.

Ill With Want

Temporary is my time, ain't nothing on this world that's mine
Except the will I found to carry on
Free is not your right to choose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find until it's gone

how can you argue with live cello and upright bass? the avett brothers were recently introduced to me. dig.
